Language & Literature 8 is a continuation of English/Language Arts skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visually representing. These abilities are developed within the context of core literature units including novels, short stories, and poetry. Literary devices such as theme, characterization, conflict, setting, and plot are taught to provide a strong foundation for analytical writing. Vocabulary development incorporates the understanding of words based on context clues and word origins. The focus of writing includes the mastering of several modes, such as literary analysis, expository, narrative, persuasive, compare and contrast, research, and journaling. Students will also be exposed to various genres of literature through assigned reading.
